Most cruise ships have shuttle boat services from the
Stazione Marittima to the Riva degli Schiavoni (right off St. Marks Square).
INTRODUCTORY TOUR
This tour covers the
highlights of this magical city: St. Marks Basilica and Square, the Doge’s
Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the famous prison. Afterwards walk “backstage”
to discover the urban development of Venice—its bridges, narrow
alleyways, squares, and imposing churches and ancient palaces. This part
of the tour ends near the Rialto Bridge and is followed by a private motor
yacht tour of the Grand Canal and on to Murano to see its world famous
glass making workshops.
While the above tour is for first time visitors to the “Serenissima”,
following are a number of “discovery” tours—which visit
different areas of Venice.
A. CANAREGGIO AND THE JEWISH GHETTO
Canareggio
is one of the unspoiled parts of Venice—home to an open-air market
and inhabited by Venetians for generations. A visit to the Jewish Ghetto
(with its historic synagogues and fascinating Jewish Museum) is the highlight
of this tour.
B. THE VENETIAN SCHOOL OF COLOR TOUR IS AMUST FOR ART LOVERS
The Frari Church contains masterpieces of Giovanni
Bellini and Titian. A few steps away is the Scuola di San Rocco (once
the seat of a brotherhood formed to assist people during the plagues).
This “Scuola” contains Jacopo Tintoretto’s most famous
works.
C. 500 YEARS OF PAINTING AT THE ACCADEMIA MUSEUM
This world famous Museum Contains an overview of art from the 14th century
(Paolo Veneziano’s jewel-like Altarpieces) through the enchanting
work of Giovanni Bellini and Carpaccio to Venice’s Golden Age of
Paintings (Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese) ending with Tiepolo
and Canaletto in the 18th century.
D. THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
A great American
art museum with distinctive Venetian charm. Peggy Guggenheim’s Grand Canal Palazzo contains
modern masterpieces by Picasso, Braque, DeChirico, Ernst, Miro (a 2 hour
tour).
